Patches and embroidery make a varsity jacket yours. There are five common types, and each gives a different look. Here is how they compare, from chenille vs embroidered patches to sublimation.
Quick guide
- Detailed logos or small text: digital embroidery
- Classic letterman look: felt or chenille
- Crests and badges: embroidered patches
- Full-color artwork or photos: sublimation patches
Digital embroidery
Digital embroidery turns a logo, name or artwork into stitches sewn directly onto the jacket. It suits detailed designs and small text.

Felt patches
Felt patches are a classic feature of traditional varsity and letterman jackets. They are made from felt fabric and sewn on, giving a bold, timeless look. Letters and numbers often use felt.

Embroidered patches
Embroidered patches are stitched separately with a border, then sewn onto the jacket. They work well for crests, mascots and badges.

Chenille patches
Chenille has a raised, fuzzy texture and is the traditional choice for big letters and school logos.

Sublimation patches
Sublimation patches are printed rather than stitched, so they can show full-color artwork, photos and smooth gradients. They suit detailed graphics that would be hard to embroider. Chenille and embroidered patches are the classic choices for letters and crests, while sublimation is best when your design has many colors or fine detail.
Patch types compared
| Type | Best for | Look |
|---|---|---|
| Digital embroidery | Detailed logos, small text | Stitched into the jacket |
| Felt patches | Letters, numbers | Bold and classic |
| Embroidered patches | Crests, mascots, badges | Bordered, sewn on |
| Chenille patches | Big letters, school logos | Raised and textured |
| Sublimation patches | Full-color artwork, photos | Printed, smooth and flat |
You can also combine types on one jacket, for example chenille letters on the chest and embroidery on the back.
